William Cannon worked at the Desert Laboratory from 1903 until 1919. He was the first full-time researcher at the Desert Laboratory, as well as the first plant ecologist in the Sonoran Desert. Cannon studied the root systems of desert plants, and root growth under controlled conditions. He was a founding member of the Ecological Society of America.
