Gila River near Clifton (09442000), June 24, 1964

Raymond M. Turner
Few large floods occurred on the Gila River in the middle part
of the 20th century, and the riparian vegetation responded by growing in dense
assemblages. Cottonwood trees in particular have benefitted, although the
largest increase may be in the mesquite trees in the foreground. The perennial
flow in the Gila can only be seen at far left, center, and far right owing
to the increased stature of the plants.
