Gila River near Clifton (09442000), May 18, 1980

Raymond M. Turner
Large floods in the 1970s scoured much of the floodplain, but
most of the larger riparian plants remain and are larger. The largest flood,
in 1979, had a discharge of 57,000 ft3/s, which is the flood of
record at this station (record: 1911-1917, 1928-present). If the trees were
not destroyed or damaged during the floods, they benefitted from the increased
water infiltrating into the floodplain. The gaging station, which was moved
from a site nearby, now appears on the upstream side of the bridge at far
right.
