Volney Spalding worked at the Desert Laboratory from 1903 until 1909. He established 19 permanent plots on Tumamoc Hill and mapped perennial plants in 1906. Spalding also mapped the distribution of the saguaro population on and around Tumamoc Hill. He was an editor of Plant World (later Ecology).
